VIKTOR TIMOFEEV
Hannah Barry Gallery is pleased to announce LOCAL_AREA_NETWORK[s], the first solo exhibition of artist Viktor Timofeev in the UK. Taking its title from the term describing a cluster of connected computer nodes, the exhibition explores a new model of community and cooperative interaction, expressing an Arcadian sociographical ideal in a language of geometrical precision.
Timofeev's work is influenced by progressive architecture, utopian community and skateboarding ideology. The eclecticism of Timofeev's source materials, incorporated with a radically democratic indifference to ideological hierarchy, creates scenes that strike the viewer as both utilitarian and surreal. Displaced edifices and cryptic typographies are the founding elements of the work. The hypnagogic effect of the work is reinforced by the recurrence of visual motifs, and the detachment from their normal context of such loaded symbols as rainbows and dumpsters.
The architectural exactitude of Timofeev's method introduces a tension between the inspiriting energy of the works and their strictly delineated formal arrangement. It is in the conflict of freedom and utility that the drama of these paintings and drawings is forged.
